Oxidative Therapy

What is it?

Oxidative Therapy or Medical Ozone Therapy is a burgeoning field with many applications for a variety of conditions including infection, autoimmunity, fatigue and inflammation, and even shows some promise in the field of anti-aging.  This technique has been studied with great scientific rigor in Europe and many other countries around the world.  It is a relatively new therapy in the United States but there is a large body of evidence supporting its application and efficacy.  The Logan Institute has added this as another cutting edge, therapeutic option for patients receiving treatments at the Institute.

In 2019, Dr. Logan was appointed and accepted to serve on the International Scientific Committee of Ozone Therapy (ISCO).  ISCO is the international governing board in charge of updating the application of ozone therapy in Europe, Russia and many other countries. This organization develops and maintains the Madrid Declaration on Ozone Therapy (now in its 3rd edition).  This important document is the first and only global consensus document in the history of ozone therapy and has become an important reference tool for health professional that use ozone therapy, anywhere in the world.  The Madrid Declaration outlines the safe and effective use of oxidative therapy from more than 2,000 studies and 17 countries that contributed to its creation. As a representative from the United States, Dr. Logan will help to evaluate the clinical evidence and techniques that govern the safe and effective use of oxidative therapy around the globe.

When ozone is used in proper doses, which is based on the general condition of the patient, it is an extremely effective and safe therapy.  The only contraindication to ozone therapy is a rare genetic condition called G6PD enzyme deficiency, which occurs in a small percentage of individuals of Middle Eastern heritage.  This can be tested for in the laboratory and should be avoided in those individuals.

What does it do?

Ozone Therapy is a medical treatment that uses an ozone–oxygen mixture.  There are no ozone receptors in the human body and the pharmacological mechanisms of action are indirect through a variety of cell mediators.  Specifically, there is increased protein synthesis of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory molecules and immune modulating factors.  It also has biological effects against bacteria, viruses and parasitic infections.  Ozone is a gas and is able to pass directly through the cell wall without a receptor or carrier, which makes it an ideal substance to treat a variety of illnesses.

Ozone can be administered topically, orally, intravenously and/or infused into joints and other body cavities.
